At right, John Swope of Davis, Calif., pounds a cross in to the ground with the help of his sister Sandy, also of Davis. The pair were a part of about 60 volunteers from Vacaville to Redding who showed up at an abandoned airstrip along eastbound Interstate 80 in Vacaville Saturday, Jan. 17, 2009 to plant crosses in the ground as a means to raise awareness of abortion. Led by Alpha Pregnancy Resource Center, the group placed 3,000 of the crosses symbolizing the number of abortions that roughly occur each day in the United States.
