Benicia

The Benicia Historical Museum, dedicated to the preservation of Benicia's history and culture, is housed in a former camel barn. This relates to a failed attempt by the U. S. Army to use camels as pack animals before the Civil War. The museum contains a gift shop carrying books on Benicia and arsenal history, children's books, Camel Race shirts, and other items. On the lower level is the Charles P. Stone Hall, rented for weddings, concerts, business meetings and other occasions.

• Benicia Fire Museum: 900 East 2nd St., 745-1688. Offers tours by appointment. The Benicia Fire Museum is a volunteer-run facility that offer tours for visitors by appointment. Open the first three Sundays of the month from noon to 4 p.m. or by appointment. Established in 1847, this is California's oldest fire department featuring some of the state's rarest fire fighting equipment, including a hand-pumper from 1820 and a four-wheel-drive fire engine circa 1949. Other exhibits include historical photographs, and memorabilia.

Travis Air Force Base

Located 12 miles east on Highway 12, the railway museum is a project of the Bay Area Electric Railroad Association, a non-profit, tax-exempt, educational institution. Its collection includes vintage streetcars, key system trains, a Blackpool English Open Train, a New York "L" Train and miscellaneous equipment. Streetcar rides are offered, weather permitting. Open year around Saturdays and Sundays, 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Memorial Day through Labor Day. Vacaville

Through exhibits, publications and educational programs, the museum continuously promotes the value of community heritage. Since 1984, the Vacaville Museum has produced more than 30 exhibits, as well as numerous publications important to the history and sense of place that is Solano County. Vallejo
• Vallejo Naval and Historical Museum: 734 Marin St., 643-0077, www.vallejomuseum.org. This museum chronicles the history of Vallejo and the former Mare Island Naval Base. Mare Island was the nation's first naval base in the western U.S. Workers built more than 500 ships between 1859 and 1970. The building is the Old Vallejo City Hall, built in 1927, and is on the National Register of Historic Places. A popular attraction at the museum is the working periscope. The museum houses five galleries: Hall of History, South Gallery, Staircase of Seapower, Heritage Chamber, and Saginaw Gallery. The Staircase of Seapower includes a 1/4 scale model of the bow of Saginaw, the first ship built at Mare Island in 1859. A permanent "greenbelt" nearly surrounds American Canyon, with the Napa River and a 500-acre Wetlands Preservation Park to the west, the 640-acre Jack and Bernice Newell Wilderness Preserve to the east, vineyard covered foothills of the Sulphur Springs Mountain Range to the northeast, the Napa Airport to the north and the City of Vallejo to the south.

The area features rough terrain, with evergreen forests in the canyons on north-facing slopes and chaparral on the south-facing slopes. There is a five-mile hike to the top of Mount St. Helena.

• Lynch Canyon Open Space, owned by Solano Land Trust, is open to the public for docent led tours. The 1,040 acre property was originally owned by Gen. Mariano Vallejo in the 1830s and 40s. Wildlife include golden eagles, raptors, deer, raccoon, skunks, coyotes, squirrels, rabbits and an occasional mountainlion. Treaveling eastbound on I-80, take the Hiddenbrooke exit and follow McGary Road (a frontage road) east until a left turn under the highway can be made. Continue until the gates are visible.

• California Grand Casino. The historic California Grand Casino is located in Mount Diablo Valley in the San Francisco Bay Area. The casino action started back in 1854 when the Woodford Hotel and Saloon opened its doors and offered alcohol, women and gambling.
