Dixon
Dixon is Solano County's northernmost city. Rooted in rural heritage, Dixon expects to continue its agricultural orientation as it prepares for economic and technological growth. The development of the northeast quadrant is underway, with a WalMart store completed in 2005. The city is in the process of evaluating an application from Ontario, Canada-based Magna Entertainment Corp., which has applied to build a $250 million horse racing and entertainment development on roughly 260 acres in the same area. In addition, the construction of a new high school is slated to be completed by 2007, and more than 800 homes are under construction in southwest Dixon. The Dixon area was first settled in 1852 by Elijah S. Silvey, who operated a roadhouse in a farming community known as Silveyville about two miles northwest of where Dixon now stands. The community changed overnight when rancher Thomas Dickson donated 10 acres near the California Pacific Railroad line for a town site and depot. Silveyville buildings were placed on logs and rolled to the new site. One of them, the United Methodist Church, still stands. The new town was to be renamed after its benefactor, but the name was misspelled by a shipping clerk, and the name stuck. Dixon was incorporated in 1878. In its early years, the area was known for grain, alfalfa and dairy farming. Today it enjoys a national reputation in the sheep and lamb industry. The city is home to the Dixon Lambtown USA festival and the May Fair, the oldest state-affiliated fair in California.
