Napa

Napa stands at the entrance to the world famous Napa Valley. For some years, the business climate has been evolving from a largely agricultural and tourism base to a more diverse market, including high-tech, specialty food, health care, retail and service industries. Small boutique specialty shops and larger retail centers, antiques and emporium-style stores and outlet shops feature designer and manufacturers.

The Napa Farmer's Market features fresh produce, flowers, assorted specialty items and an outdoor cafe, while the Napa's Chef's Market, Friday afternoons during the same period, provides music, food, drink, crafts, and cooking demonstrations.

Restoration of the historic Margrit Biever Mondavi Opera House Theatre has already had noteworthy live presentations at the venue.

The Napa County Historical Society, Napa Valley Museum, Sharpsteen Museum and numerous smaller venues have linked the rich heritage of the region for present and future generations.

Since the 1850s, the city of Napa has grown from a rural town known chiefly for prunes, Kaiser Steel and the Napa State Hospital to an increasingly urban community known for its position in the world-renowned Napa Valley wine-growing region.

The city continued to struggle, however, with finding ways to draw visitors, a job made no easier by periodic flooding in the downtown area.

That is expected to change radically with the completion of the massive Napa River flood control project, which will improve the river and waterfront while ending decades of costly flooding in downtown Napa.

Nearly finished, the project has property owners and developers envisioning a city that will offer amenities and access all along the river's course while becoming a major attraction to visitors.

History

The first recorded exploration of the Napa Valley was led by Padre Jose Altamira in 1823. Then the population was estimated at between 3,000 and 6,000 Indians. The name Napa is said to derive from the Napa Tribe of Native Americans who once shared the lush green valley with deer, grizzly bears, elk and panthers.

Napa City, established in 1847 and incorporated in 1872, was laid out by Nathan Coombs on property he acquired from Nicholas Higuera's Rancho entre-Napa, an 1836 Mexican Land Grant, but it was the gold rush of the early 1850s that caused the city to grow.
