Suisun City
By relying on its strengths and exploiting the natural ambiance of its setting adjacent to the Suisun Marsh, the city has transformed the downtown and waterfront areas into a vibrant mixed-use business district with shops, offices and restaurants all within walking distance of the Amtrak station and the marina. Once an industrial backwater, the Waterfront District was transformed with a theater, new downtown community facilities, mile-long public Promenade, and an expanded and improved public marina, including a public boat launch. Harbor Square, a massive mixed use commercial development, and a waterfront hotel, are on the way. The city was originally an island. Its slough was the head of navigable waters down which grain crops were shipped from valleys to the north. Curtis Wilson and Dr. John Baker first sailed up the slough in 1850, landing at what is now Suisun City. The city was founded in 1851. Capt. Josiah Wing was the first to develop the place commercially, building a warehouse here in 1852. By 1854 the city had developed extensively, so Wing and John Owen laid out the town site. The city was later incorporated in 1868. Railroad development brought new prosperity to much of Solano County, and by May 1867 work had begun on the railroad bed from Vallejo through Jameson Canyon to Suisun City. The city remained a bustling hub of Solano County until Interstate 80 opened in the 1960s, effectively switching commercial traffic into nearby Fairfield. In the past decade, Suisun City has recreated itself as a prosperous waterfront community with a relaxed feel.
