Vallejo
Vallejo was facing some of its toughest-ever challenges as 2008 began and the local, state and national economies dipped. Shortly after city elections chose a new council majority in November 2007, and mayor, the city began extensive talks with its labor unions in an effort to avoid becoming one of the first California cities to declare bankruptcy. As this almanac went to press, the two sides were in meetings to see if they could devise a long-range fiscal plan to stave off bankruptcy and put in place revenue-generating efforts to keep the city solvent... Although closed in 1996, the former Mare Island Naval Shipyard is continuing its conversion to civilian uses with hundreds of new homes. New businesses are locating there, and Touro University is moving forward on a university village. Today, group tours are available to see Mare Island's unique history, including St. Peter's Chapel, the homes on Officers Row, and the dry-docks, where hundreds of ships were built. Vallejo's own history can be viewed by a tour of the city's homes dating to the 1800s, and also at the Vallejo Naval and Historical Museum, located in the old City Hall. Other features Vallejo is also home to the California Maritime Academy, a California State University. A marine-oriented college of business and technology, Cal Maritime offers degrees in Business Administration, Facilities Engineering Technology, Marine Engineering Technology, Marine Transportation and Mechanical Engineering. Touro University, an osteopathic medicine teaching facility, has attracted hundreds of students from across the country to learn this specialization. For more than 20 years Vallejo has been the home of Six Flags Marine World, which is among the state's top 10 tourist destinations, with its combination of animal exhibits and knuckle-whitening roller coasters. In early 2007, it changed its name once again, this time to Six Flags Discovery Kingdom. The city's average yearly temperature is between 48F and 71F, and there are ample opportunities for sailing, fishing, wind surfing, jet skiing and more along the bustling waterfront. History In 1844, General Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo saw potential in the area, which had been granted to him by the Mexican government, and later came to bear his name. The area was inhabited by the Suisun Tribe of Native Americans. Their leader at the time was Chief Solano, for whom Vallejo had an adobe house built on the Suscol creek. Some would-be settlers came through the area in 1847, but it wasn't until the discovery of gold and the subsequent gold rush in 1849 that the area began to see white settlers in large numbers. After California was admitted to the union in 1850, Vallejo was twice briefly the site of the state capital, and grew over time into an important shipping and naval center. The Mare Island Naval Shipyard, established in 1854, was the West Coast's first naval installation, and remains an important asset for economic development opportunities, despite its closure. Incorporated in March 30, 1868 with a chartered form of government, Vallejo is one of the state's oldest cities, boasting streets lined with beautifully restored Victorian homes and storefronts. Vallejo is also the last remaining area on the San Francisco Bay available for development.
