Who knew Solano made so much?
Most everyone knows that the king of beers is brewed just off Interstate 80 in Fairfield, and that not far away, a rainbow of jelly beans delight tour-takers every day.
In Vacaville, mattresses and windows are big business. Campbell Soup Supply Co. in Dixon has been making its famous tomato soup for years, with help from a bountiful local tomato harvest. And more recently, Genentech has become a household name.
But the economy of Solano County is much more diverse, robust and downright interesting. For instance, did you know a Fairfield firm makes call buttons for nurses? Or that the cookie part of the famous "It's It" is baked in Suisun City?
Or that corks for Martinelli's sparking apple cider are Solano-born? Or that a famous Japanese box lunch is boxed here?
Thousands of products are born, bred, manufactured, sculpted, grown, designed and even marketed right here in northern Solano County. And most of them are well-kept secrets.
Some require an entrepreneur's enterprise, such as the spicy avocado salsa bottled in Vacaville, or the unique filters made by a team of enterprising businessmen in Vacaville's industrial park. Others require a farmer's patience and the blessing of Mother Nature to bring a crop to fruition.
In "Made in Solano" you will find stories of folks who have had the courage to turn hobbies into businesses. They do what they love and they love what they do.
You'll discover interesting facts about some of Solano County's more well-known products, and get a peek at new products just coming to market.
It's a cornucopia of many things, all of which start in Solano County.
